Slowdown on Job Losses

According to figures released from Warwick Business School. The number of job losses in the UK has slowed significantly in recent months.

The school’s Industrial Relations Research Unit monitors all UK job losses announced on a four-week basis for the European Restructuring Monitor. The most recent period from 16 March to 12 April had fallen to 6,962.

If the trends are an accurate forecast, then the UK labour market could start to recover earlier than has been predicted. Official figures published in April showed unemployment levels had continued to rise, reaching 2.1 million in the three months to February 2009. The Independent newspaper reported last week that the number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits fell, as initial claims for state unemployment benefits declined by 14,000 to 631,000 last week.

Although this does seem to be positive news, Sage and BAE Systems are both set to axe up to 500 jobs, a sign that the recession is still affecting many organisations in the UK.
