Recognise your employees

March 19, 2010

There are definite signs the recruitment market has picked up, and some companies are now facing retention challenges.

Recognising your employees is vital, particularly in the current climate. Recognition does not need to cost a business money – it’s not all about reward. People thrive on praise and recognition, and lots of encouragement helps get the best out of your people.

Keep people motivated at work – get to know them and find out what motivates them. You’ll find people are motivated by different things – for some it is about money, for others it is recognition.

How can I recognise the efforts of my team?

It does not have to be a formal scheme, but done informally. Some larger companies have employee of the month schemes, and reward staff with incentives such as a dedicated car parking space, free lunch vouchers or an extra holiday. As I said – people are motivated in different ways so try and be creative.
Recognition can come from management and from other colleagues. In an ideal world, you should try and create a culture which allows you to recognise both.

Regardless of the methods you choose, recognising the efforts of your employees brings great benefits to your business. Employees are more engaged, motivated and productive – deliver a fantastic return on investment.

Whichever way you do it, recognising employees delivers great benefits to your business. Develop your managers to create a culture which rewards and recognises your employees. During my career in HR, I seem to spend a large part of my time dealing with problem employees and we lose sight of the good ones – the ones that drive your business forward. Don’t fall into this trap and develop a programme which ensures your good performers are recognised. Remember, if you do this they are more likely to repeat their behaviour again – meaning more consistent results for you.

We have extensive experience in line manager development programmes and reward strategies, so why don’t you contact us to discuss further and see how we can help tailor a programme for your organisation that will really drive your profits?
